Chapter 719 - Visiting the in-laws: Fortress City of Borg (Part 1)
After finishing all I needed to do in the Port City of Hurley, I teleported back to the palace in Hoffen City to bring back Xenos. He looked exhausted but nonetheless, very happy. I gave him a quick kiss on his lips and I am again on my way to the next destination.You might be thinking in the lines of... Since Luna is already in the palace, why didn’t she just take Yren with her, right? The answer is: He has already gone ahead to the Fortress City of Borg and have gone undercover.
Out of all the territories that I have visited so far, the Fortress City of Borg is not necessarily the most dangerous but it has the most intricate when it comes to leadership, power and hierarchy. Since it is similar to a military base, might makes right and people mostly live in survival mode everyday.
If you add the fact that my father-in-law is the current condottierro of the Wrath Mercenary Group, it add another layer of difficulty to our mission because it would be quite hard to even approach him or even set an appointment with him. In this light, Yren had to make an extra effort to check on the place first and find ways to get inside Wrath to get that much needed appointment with the father that he has never met.
From the Port City of Hurley to the Fortress City of Borg which is technically on different sides of the region, it would take me about 2 days of continuous travel and multiple carriage transfers to get to my destination. As to why I needed to transfer carriages, the towns that I will be passing through have strict security and will not let any foreign carriages to pass due to recent bandit activities. I had to take a local carriage with its designated driver to get to the next point.
It was the most taxing travel I had to date but I had no choice since I had to map the place as well. I can only teleport to places that I have previously visited too. Going there would test my patience but the trip back would be fine, I guess.
I finally reached the Fort City of Borg around lunch time on the second day after I left the Port City of Hurley. At that time, I was just so fed up with being inside the carriage that I did not want to see or even hear one approaching me any time soon.
To get my mind off of all the annoyance I felt about the length of the travel time, I quickly looked for an inn to rest in for a bit. As for lunch, having it a little late like after a couple of hours would still be fine. I do not have the energy to go inside food establishments full of people right now.
Before alighting the carriage, I have already changed my look to a very plain looking human girl who should be in her early 20s. I made my hair look dull, brown-colored and shoulder length while my skin color was changed to a darker shade as if I was burnt by working in farms all my life, To match the whole look, I dressed in cheap clothes and made my body a little muscular, just enough that I do not look like someone who is a pushover.
I went to an inn that is in a busy area but I made sure that it does not have a pub on the first floor so it wouldn’t be too crowded and noisy during most parts of the day. Since this is a fort, the crowd is made up of soldiers, mercenaries and arena fighters, the same folks that love to spend their free time inside pubs.
After settling finally to a mid-priced inn that is on a corner lot but not on the main road, I laid on the bed and stared at the ceiling. I looked like I wasn’t doing anything if someone looked at me but I am actually sending messages to Alstein, Laerad and Yren to get updates on the tasks I have left to them the last time we talked. I also wrote and left letters inside the shared storages I have with my other husbands. I had to be fair to everyone and it does take a lot of effort to do so anyway.
For Alstein, I checked if he has returned safely to Vlaelmundr and if he had already made preparations to start our little plan. Honestly, I was surprised that he is willing to do the task I asked him to do though it was as good as betrayal to his own kind. I guess, he is just so done with dealing with all of them so he’d rather be on my team.
For Laerad, I am checking on the him and the babies as he was the only husband that has been pregnant for the longest time (almost a year). He was a deity so I kind of expected it but I did not think it would take this long. He can pop any minute and it makes me worry a lot.
On the other hand, I also reminded Laerad that we might need to use the new Vlaelmundr sooner than we expected. I also gave him a summary of the contents of my agreement with my little purple dragon friend. I heard a loud gasp from his end as if he was surprised that I actually made connection with them. But he seemed to be quite happy with the arrangement more than me for some reason.
Lastly, for Yren, I had to check how his undercover work is going. He has been in the Fortress City of Borg for a little over two weeks now and as per his last message, he has successfully gotten through the trials andwas accepted as a new recruit of Wrath.
Yren mostly hid his face like some kind of ninja even during the first time I met him but it came as an advantage on his current mission since he found out that he looks too similar to his own father even if my father-in-law’s face is disfigured now. Yren did not want to find unnecessary trouble or commit any mistakes in this mission so he opted to be as discreet as he can.
Finally, I only felt in the mood to go out of the inn when I got responses from all three of the husbands that have more urgent correspondences. As for the other letters, I should be able to get responses in the next few hours. The latest would arrive most likely by tomorrow for those that are busier than others.
